Marvel Legends is 1:12 scale. Hasbro sells it as “6-inch scale”, and the name is the arithmetic: a 6 ft man is 72 in tall, and 72 / 12 = 6 in. The other common sizes convert the same way: Wikipedia’s action figure scale table pairs 3.75-inch figures with 1:18, 7-inch with 1:10 and 12-inch with 1:6.
| Line | Maker | Size as sold | Scale | A 6 ft person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marvel Legends Series | Hasbro | 6-inch scale | 1:12 | 152.4 mm (6.00 in) |
| Star Wars: The Black Series | Hasbro | 6-inch scale | 1:12 | 152.4 mm (6.00 in) |
| G.I. Joe Classified Series | Hasbro | 6-inch scale | 1:12 | 152.4 mm (6.00 in) |
| WWE Elite Collection, Main Event | Mattel | 6-inch scale | 1:12 | 152.4 mm (6.00 in) |
| S.H.Figuarts | Bandai (Tamashii Nations) | about 145 to 150 mm tall, no ratio stated | about 1:12 | 152.4 mm (6.00 in) |
| Most NECA figures | NECA | 7″ scale | 1:10 | 182.9 mm (7.20 in) |
| Hot Toys | Hot Toys | 1/6th scale | 1:6 | 304.8 mm (12.00 in) |
| Original G.I. Joe (1964) | Hasbro | 12-inch | 1:6 | 304.8 mm (12.00 in) |
| G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1982) | Hasbro | 3.75-inch | 1:18 | 101.6 mm (4.00 in) |
| Warhammer 40,000 figures | JoyToy | 1/18 scale | 1:18 | 101.6 mm (4.00 in) |
A 6 ft person is 6 × 304.8 = 1,828.8 mm, since the foot is exactly 304.8 mm (NIST). The miniature scale calculator uses an average 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in) man from The Miniatures Page instead. On that reference a figure is 1,730 / 12 = 144.2 mm (5.68 in) at 1:12, 173.0 mm at 1:10, 288.3 mm at 1:6 and 96.1 mm at 1:18.
What scale is Marvel Legends?
Marvel Legends is 1:12 scale. Hasbro lists the line as “6-inch scale”, with a figure scale of 6 inches (15 cm), and Wikipedia’s action figure scale table puts 6-inch figures at 1:12. At that ratio one real foot is one inch, so a 6 ft character stands 6 in tall and a 7 ft character 7 in.
The Marvel Legends name also appears on a retro 3.75-inch line, which is 1:18, not 1:12.
What scale is Star Wars Black Series?
Star Wars: The Black Series is 1:12 scale. Hasbro announced it in January 2013 as “a 6-inch scale” of Star Wars characters, and Wikipedia’s scale table puts 6-inch figures at 1:12, the same as Marvel Legends. A 6 ft character stands 6 in (152.4 mm), so accessories made for one line fit the other.
Wikipedia notes that Hasbro also released 3.75-inch Black Series figures alongside the 6-inch ones. Those are 1:18, the size of Kenner’s original Star Wars figures. To suit them, print a 6-inch accessory at 12 / 18 = 66.67%.
What scale is G.I. Joe Classified?
G.I. Joe Classified is 1:12 scale. Hasbro announced the series in 2020 as a line of highly articulated 6-inch scale figures, and the Hasbro Pulse listing for #198 Airtight reads “6-inch (15 cm) scale”. That matches Marvel Legends and Star Wars: The Black Series, so a 6 ft soldier stands 6 in tall.
Older G.I. Joe lines use other scales:
| G.I. Joe line | Launched | Size | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original G.I. Joe | 1964 | 12-inch | 1:6 |
| G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero | 1982 | 3.75-inch | 1:18 |
| G.I. Joe Classified Series | 2020 | 6-inch scale | 1:12 |
Wikipedia’s action figure article gives the 1964 figure itself as 11.5 in, which is 11.5 × 6 = 69 in (5 ft 9 in) at 1:6. To take a 3.75-inch accessory up to Classified size, print it at 18 / 12 = 150%. To take a Classified accessory up to the 12-inch figures, print it at 200%.
What scale are NECA figures?
Most NECA figures are 1:10 scale. NECA titles them “7″ Scale Action Figure”, and Wikipedia’s scale table puts 7-inch figures (most NECA figures among them) at 1:10. At that ratio a 6 ft person is 7.2 in (182.9 mm) tall, so a NECA figure stands 20% taller than a 6-inch figure of the same character.
Not every NECA figure is 7-inch scale. Some are sold by height, such as the 9″ articulated Jack Skellington, so read the size in the product name.
To fit a 1:12 accessory to a NECA figure, print it at 12 / 10 = 120%. For the reverse, use 83.33%.
What scale is S.H.Figuarts?
S.H.Figuarts (SHF) has no stated scale. Bandai’s Tamashii Nations calls it a palm-size figure line and lists an overall height per figure instead: about 145 mm (5.71 in) for Kamen Rider Kuuga Mighty Form and about 150 mm (5.91 in) for Ultraman Hikari. Multiplied by 12, Kuuga’s 145 mm is 1,740 mm (5 ft 8.5 in): a human-sized SHF hero sits close to 1:12, with the 6-inch lines.
What scale is Hot Toys?
Hot Toys figures are 1:6 scale. Hot Toys calls them “1/6th scale” collectible figures, and at 1:6 a 6 ft person is 12 in (304.8 mm) tall. Heights follow the character: Sideshow lists the Hot Toys Steve Rogers at about 31 cm (12.2 in) and the Wolverine at about 29 cm (11.42 in).
At 1:6, the 31 cm Steve Rogers works out to a 310 × 6 = 1,860 mm (6 ft 1 in) man and the 29 cm Wolverine to 290 × 6 = 1,740 mm (5 ft 8.5 in). Wikipedia calls the 12-inch 1:6 size “playscale”, shared with the original G.I. Joe and with Barbie. A part made for a 6-inch figure needs 12 / 6 = 200% to fit a Hot Toys figure.
What scale are WWE figures?
Mattel’s WWE figures are 1:12. Mattel describes its WWE Elite Collection figures as “6-inch scale” and uses the same words for the Main Event series, so they share a scale with Marvel Legends and the other 6-inch lines. The exception is the LJN Superstars reissues, which copy the 1980s originals at an 8-inch size.
What scale is JoyToy?
JoyToy’s Warhammer 40,000 figures are 1:18. Wargamer describes the scale as one inch of figure for 18 inches of character, and gives JoyToy’s 7 ft Primaris Space Marines as 4.7 in tall (84 / 18 = 4.67 in). A 6 ft person is 4 in (101.6 mm) at 1:18, so JoyToy figures sit with 3.75-inch lines, not 6-inch ones.
What is 1:12 miniature scale?
1:12 is one inch to the foot: every real foot (304.8 mm) becomes 1 in (25.4 mm). Wikipedia’s list of scale model sizes gives 1:12 both for 6-inch action figures and for “Full Scale” dollhouses for adult collectors. Dollhouse furniture sold as 1:12 is therefore drawn to the same scale as Marvel Legends, Black Series, G.I. Joe Classified and WWE figures.
That gives a shortcut: a real size in feet is the 1:12 size in inches. An 80 in door is 6 ft 8 in, so it prints 6.67 in tall.
How do you 3D print 1:12 scale accessories?
Scale a real-size model to 100 / 12 = 8.33% for 1:12, or 16.67% for 1:6, in the slicer’s scale box with uniform scaling on. A file already made for one figure scale converts by dividing the ratios: 1:12 to 1:6 is 12 / 6 = 200%. The scale calculator does both and checks the result against your build volume.
| From | To | Slicer scale |
|---|---|---|
| Real size (1:1) | 1:18 (3.75-inch) | 5.56% |
| Real size (1:1) | 1:12 (6-inch) | 8.33% |
| Real size (1:1) | 1:10 (7-inch) | 10% |
| Real size (1:1) | 1:6 (12-inch) | 16.67% |
| 1:12 | 1:6 | 200% |
| 1:6 | 1:12 | 50% |
| 1:12 | 1:10 | 120% |
| 1:10 | 1:12 | 83.33% |
| 1:12 | 1:18 | 66.67% |
| 1:18 | 1:12 | 150% |
For everyday props, the printed size is the real size divided by 12 or by 6:
| Object | Real size | At 1:12 (6-inch) | At 1:6 (12-inch) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 oz soda can, height × width | 122.7 × 66.0 mm (4.83 × 2.6 in) | 10.2 × 5.5 mm (0.40 × 0.22 in) | 20.4 × 11.0 mm (0.81 × 0.43 in) |
| iPhone 17, height × width | 149.6 × 71.5 mm (5.89 × 2.81 in) | 12.5 × 6.0 mm (0.49 × 0.23 in) | 24.9 × 11.9 mm (0.98 × 0.47 in) |
| M4 carbine, stock extended | 838 mm (33 in) | 69.9 mm (2.75 in) | 139.7 mm (5.50 in) |
| Pallet, 48 × 40 × 6 in | 1,219 × 1,016 × 152 mm | 101.6 × 84.7 × 12.7 mm (4.00 × 3.33 × 0.50 in) | 203.2 × 169.3 × 25.4 mm (8.00 × 6.67 × 1.00 in) |
| Interior door, 30 × 80 in | 762 × 2,032 mm | 63.5 × 169.3 mm (2.50 × 6.67 in) | 127.0 × 338.7 mm (5.00 × 13.33 in) |
Before printing, check two things:
- The figure in hand. Character heights vary, as the two Hot Toys figures above show. For a prop that must match one figure, divide the character’s real height by the figure’s height and use that ratio instead of the nominal one.
- Thin parts. Everything shrinks by the same factor. The iPhone 17 is 7.95 mm thick, which becomes 0.66 mm at 1:12, less than two 0.4 mm lines side by side. The line width calculator shows what your nozzle can draw.
