An Ender-3 or Ender-3 Pro needs at least 440 mm wide, 455 mm deep and 465 mm tall inside an enclosure (17.3 × 17.9 × 18.3 in). An Ender-3 V2 needs at least 475 × 470 × 620 mm (18.7 × 18.5 × 24.4 in). Creality lists all three for its small enclosure, sold at 480 × 600 × 720 mm (18.9 × 23.6 × 28.3 in).
What size enclosure does an Ender 3 need?
At least 440 mm wide, 455 mm deep and 465 mm tall inside (17.3 × 17.9 × 18.3 in) for an Ender-3 or Ender-3 Pro. Creality lists both at 440 × 440 × 465 mm, but the moving bed sweeps at least 455 mm. Creality sells its small enclosure, 480 × 600 × 720 mm, for both.
| Model | Published size | In inches | Net weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ender-3 | 440 × 440 × 465 mm | 17.3 × 17.3 × 18.3 | 8 kg |
| Ender-3 Pro | 440 × 440 × 465 mm | 17.3 × 17.3 × 18.3 | 6.9 kg |
| Ender-3 V2 | 475 × 470 × 620 mm | 18.7 × 18.5 × 24.4 | 7.8 kg |
| Ender-3 S1 | 487 × 453 × 622 mm | 19.2 × 17.8 × 24.5 | 9.1 kg |
| Ender-3 V3 SE | 420 × 366 × 490 mm | 16.5 × 14.4 × 19.3 | 7.3 kg |
The sizes are Creality’s, except the S1, which comes from MatterHackers’ listing as width × depth × height. Creality labels no axes, and listings disagree by up to 30 mm: MatterHackers gives the Ender-3 as 420 × 410 × 470 mm.
The moving bed sets the depth
The bed slides front to back under the nozzle. The Ender-3’s plate is 235 mm deep and has to travel at least 220 mm to cover the full print depth, so it sweeps at least 455 mm. That is 15 mm more than Creality’s 440 mm figure.
Every model in the table prints 220 mm deep, so its bed covers at least 440 mm: a 220 mm plate moving 220 mm. Neither of the V3 SE’s footprint figures, 420 and 366 mm, reaches 440 mm. Push the bed fully forward, then fully back, and measure the depth both times.
Spool holder and clearance
The Ender-3 Pro, V2 and V3 SE manuals all show the stock spool holder standing upright on the top bar of the frame. Creality doesn’t say whether its heights include the holder, so measure to the top of a full spool or hang it outside the box. Neither the manuals nor Creality’s enclosure page gives a clearance figure. For a box you build, the general enclosure sizing rule adds 100 mm a side, Bambu Lab’s minimum.
What size enclosure does an Ender 3 V2 need?
At least 475 × 470 × 620 mm inside (18.7 × 18.5 × 24.4 in), Creality’s published machine size. That is 30 to 35 mm more across the footprint and 155 mm taller than the Ender-3. Creality lists the V2 for its small enclosure, 480 × 600 × 720 mm, a tight fit.
Creality doesn’t say which parts account for the extra size. One visible change: the V2’s power supply is “concealed in the machine”, while the Ender-3 Pro manual shows it mounted on the side of the frame. Both carry the spool holder on the top bar.
The V2 is 620 mm tall, so only the enclosure’s 720 mm side can be the height. That puts one of the V2’s 475 and 470 mm sides across the 480 mm side, with 5 to 10 mm to spare, and less if 480 mm is the outside size.
Enclosures sold for the Ender-3
| Enclosure | Published size | In inches | Ender-3 models listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creality, small | 480 × 600 × 720 mm | 18.9 × 23.6 × 28.3 | Ender-3, Ender-3 Pro, Ender-3 V2, Ender-3 Neo, Ender-3 V2 Neo |
| Creality, large | 750 × 700 × 900 mm | 29.5 × 27.6 × 35.4 | Ender-3 S1, Ender-3 S1 Pro, Ender-3 S1 Plus, Ender-3 Max, Ender-3 Max Neo |
Creality’s list names the Ender-3 V3 SE for neither size. Creality publishes one size per enclosure and doesn’t say whether it is the inside or the outside.
ELEGOO publishes both for its tent, which it lists for its Neptune printers rather than the Ender-3. It gives 570 × 670 × 770 mm outside and 550 × 650 × 750 mm usable inside, 20 mm less on every axis. Read a single published figure as the outside unless the seller says otherwise.
Enclosure volume for fan and heater sizing
| Box | Size | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Ender-3 minimum | 440 × 455 × 465 mm | 3.3 ft³ (0.093 m³) |
| Ender-3 V2 minimum | 475 × 470 × 620 mm | 4.9 ft³ (0.138 m³) |
| Creality, small | 480 × 600 × 720 mm | 7.3 ft³ (0.207 m³) |
| Creality, large | 750 × 700 × 900 mm | 16.7 ft³ (0.473 m³) |
m³ = width × depth × height in mm ÷ 1,000,000,000
ft³ = m³ ÷ 0.0283168
in = mm ÷ 25.4
The enclosure fan calculator and the chamber heater calculator both take the inside width, depth and height in inches or mm. The heater calculator also asks for the printer’s mass, so use the net weight from the first table.
