How much does it cost to 3D print a dragon?

Most print-in-place articulated dragons cost under $2.50 to 3D print in PLA, and an 81 cm dragon about $6.85. Filament is nearly all of that. To sell one, charge for printer time too: about $9.70 for a 36 cm dragon, or $11.17 on Etsy.

How much does it cost to 3D print a dragon?

A print-in-place articulated dragon 27 to 55 cm long costs about $0.84 to $2.32 to 3D print in PLA. It uses 39 to 110 g of filament at 2 cents a gram and prints in 3 to 6 hours, which adds 6 to 12 cents of electricity. An 81 cm dragon costs about $6.85.

These grams and hours come from the designers’ own MakerWorld print profiles, sliced for Bambu Lab printers with a 0.4 mm nozzle. All are single-color PLA.

filament cost = grams x $19.99 / 1,000 g
electricity   = 105 W / 1000 x print hours x $0.18 per kWh

36 cm Toothblade: 79 g x $0.01999 = $1.58
                  0.105 kW x 5.14 h = 0.54 kWh x $0.18 = $0.10
                  total $1.68

The $19.99 is Polymaker’s US store price for a 1 kg spool of PolyLite PLA. The 105 W is Bambu Lab’s measured average for its P1S and X1 Carbon printing PLA. The $0.18 is the U.S. average residential electricity price: the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026.

Length alone does not set the cost. The 180 cm studded dragon is a thin chain of links, so it uses about as much plastic as the bulkier 81 cm dragon. Scaling one design up costs more than its length suggests: the wingless dragon at 81 cm is 1.8 times as long as at 45 cm but uses 4 times the filament.

Multi-color dragons cost about twice as much

Color changes waste filament on purging. D3Craft’s Flexi Dragon uses 44 g and 3.42 hours in one color, but its four-color profile for Bambu Lab’s AMS (automatic material system) takes 97 g and 7.34 hours. That raises the cost from $0.94 to $2.08. The multi-color waste calculator estimates the purge for your own color swaps.

Printer wear and the model file

Filament and power are not the whole cost. Printer wear adds about 38 cents per print hour in the printer hourly rate calculator’s home example: an $800 printer resold for $150 after 3 years, printing 10% of the time. That puts the 36 cm Toothblade at $1.68 + 5.14 h x $0.38 = $3.63.

Every dragon above is a free download on MakerWorld. Some well-known dragons are paid. McGybeer’s original Articulated Dragon costs $5.00 on the Printables Store. Cinderwing 3D sells a commercial license for $10.00 a month by subscription on Patreon, MyMiniFactory or Thangs. KOGI3D’s notice on its free 55 cm dragon says it is for personal, non-commercial use, with licensing for sold prints on its Patreon.

How much should you charge for a 3D printed dragon?

Charge the filament plus your printer’s hourly rate for every print hour. At this site’s default rate of $1.58 an hour and 2 cents a gram, a 36 cm dragon (79 g, 5.14 hours) comes to $9.70. To sell it on Etsy, gross that up for 9.5% in fees and add 45 cents: $11.17.

The $1.58 is the printer hourly rate calculator’s default billable rate. It covers machine wear, electricity and overhead, plus 3 minutes of your time per print hour and 30% profit. Replace it with your own rate.

Etsy, US shop = $9.70 / (1 - 0.095)     = $10.72
              + $0.25 processing + $0.20 listing = $11.17

Etsy’s US fees are a 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing of 3% plus 25 cents, and a 20-cent listing fee. The transaction fee also applies to the shipping you charge. A sale through Etsy’s Offsite Ads costs a further 12% or 15% of the order.
