A small 3D print of 5 to 50 g costs about 10 cents to $1 at home in PLA (polylactic acid, the standard hobby filament) and electricity. A 9 g cable clip costs 19 cents and a 42 g headphone hook 90 cents. Order the same part from a library or an online service and you pay its minimum instead: $1 at some libraries, $25 at PCBWay.
How much does it cost to 3D print a small object?
A small object of 5 to 50 g costs about 10 cents to $1 to print at home in PLA. A 9 g cable clip uses 18 cents of filament and 1 cent of electricity. Ordered from a library or an online service, the minimum charge usually sets the price: $1 to $25 before shipping.
Seven small prints, priced
Grams and times come from each model’s print file on Printables, sliced by its designer for the Prusa printer named. Filament is Polymaker PolyLite PLA at $19.99 per 1 kg spool, 2.0 cents a gram, on Polymaker’s US store. Electricity is 80 W, Prusa’s measured average for its MK-series printers on PLA, at 18.31 cents per kWh. That is the US average residential price for July 2026 from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
| Object | Printer, layer height | Grams | Print time | Filament | Electricity | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cabinet knob | MINI, 0.2 mm | 6 g | 40 min | $0.12 | 1.0¢ | $0.13 |
| Cable clip | MK3S, 0.2 mm | 9 g | 51 min | $0.18 | 1.2¢ | $0.19 |
| 3DBenchy | MK3, 0.15 mm | 11 g | 2 h 5 min | $0.22 | 3.1¢ | $0.25 |
| Wall hook | MINI, 0.2 mm | 14 g | 1 h 8 min | $0.28 | 1.7¢ | $0.30 |
| Bag clip | MK3S, 0.15 mm | 17 g | 2 h 13 min | $0.34 | 3.3¢ | $0.37 |
| Phone stand | MK3S, 0.2 mm | 28 g | 3 h 14 min | $0.56 | 4.7¢ | $0.61 |
| Headphone hook | MK3S, 0.15 mm | 42 g | 4 h 21 min | $0.84 | 6.4¢ | $0.90 |
The arithmetic for the wall hook:
filament 14 g × ($19.99 ÷ 1,000 g) = $0.280
electricity 0.08 kW × 1.13 h = 0.091 kWh × 18.31¢ = $0.017
total = $0.30
Filament is 88 to 94% of every row. Print time barely moves the total: the 2-hour Benchy test boat costs 3 cents of power. On the faster MK4S, Prusa’s Benchy profile takes 14 minutes and 10 g. Buy PLA by the 5 kg spool ($79.99, 1.6 cents a gram) and each total drops by nearly a fifth.
These totals leave out printer wear and failed prints. At $0.21 per machine-hour, the default in the printer hourly rate calculator, the printer’s running cost (wear, upkeep and power) is 14 cents for the knob and 91 cents for the headphone hook. The print cost calculator adds both lines to your own grams and hours.
Ordering a small part online: the minimum is the price
Online services price small parts from a floor, not from the grams:
| Service | Published minimum or floor | Before shipping |
|---|---|---|
| PCBWay | $25 minimum order, plus a per-part finishing fee “normally less than $1” | $25 or more |
| JLC3DP | FDM (fused deposition modeling) parts “from $1.00”, no minimum order; a 40% tariff pre-collected on US plastic orders | $1.40 or more |
| Craftcloud | No minimum order set by the platform | Quote per part |
| Xometry | No minimum order for most services | Quote per part |
PCBWay states that if “your parts manufacturing cost is less than $25, we will still charge $25.” So the 19-cent cable clip costs $25 there. That is about 130 times its home cost. JLC3DP’s $1.00 floor plus 40% comes to $1.40, with shipping quoted at checkout. Order several small parts in one cart and the minimum is spread across all of them.
At a library
Libraries bill by the gram, and some add a $1 minimum:
| Library | Rate | 9 g clip | 14 g hook | 42 g hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake County, UT | $0.06/g | $0.54 | $0.84 | $2.52 |
| Mobile, AL | $0.10/g, $1 minimum | $1.00 | $1.40 | $4.20 |
| Fort Bend County, TX | $0.20/g, $1 minimum | $1.80 | $2.80 | $8.40 |
At Mobile, anything under 10 g costs the $1 minimum. More libraries, free programs and how to submit a file are in what 3D printing costs at the library.
How much should you charge for small 3D prints?
Charge a per-order minimum that pays for your handling time, then a per-part price on top. Fifteen minutes of quoting, slicing, clearing the plate and packing at $20 an hour is $5.00. That makes $5 per order, before shipping, a sensible floor. A 14 g wall hook then adds about 67 cents.
Why the minimum is per order
The plastic in a small part costs cents, but the time around it does not shrink with the part. Every order, one clip or ten, needs the same reply, slice, plate change and package. Count your own minutes. This example assumes 15:
quote and messages 5 min
slice and start 3 min
clear plate and check 2 min
pack and label 5 min
total 15 min ÷ 60 × $20/h = $5.00 per order
Put in the labor rate you actually want. At $30 an hour the same 15 minutes come to $7.50.
The per-part price
Price each part on its filament and machine time, then add your markup. The hourly rate calculator’s $0.21 per machine-hour covers depreciation, maintenance, overhead and electricity for an $800 printer busy 25% of the time. Those defaults are placeholders, so run your own.
wall hook filament 14 g × $0.02 = $0.28
machine 1.13 h × $0.21 = $0.238
cost $0.518
price at 30% markup $0.518 × 1.3 = $0.67
| Order | Handling | Parts | Order price | Per hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 wall hook | $5.00 | $0.67 | $5.67 | $5.67 |
| 4 wall hooks | $5.00 | $2.69 | $7.69 | $1.92 |
| 10 wall hooks | $5.00 | $6.73 | $11.73 | $1.17 |
The minimum is why a lone hook looks expensive and a bag of ten looks cheap. Both orders pay for the same 15 minutes.
Shipping goes on top
Postage often costs more than the print. USPS Ground Advantage charges one commercial price per zone for any package under 1 lb. It runs from $7.33 in zones 1 and 2 to $8.95 in zones 8 and 9, effective October 4, 2026. Ten 14 g hooks weigh 140 g, about 5 oz, so one hook and ten pay the same postage. Add it to the order or set a free-shipping threshold above it.
To fold failures and marketplace fees into one price, run the job through the print cost calculator.
