Bambu Lab layer height: limits, presets and first layer for every printer

Every Bambu Lab printer prints layers of 20% to 70% of the nozzle diameter: 0.08 to 0.28 mm with the stock 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.04 to 0.56 mm across the 0.2 to 0.8 mm nozzles. The default is 0.20 mm, and the first layer is half the nozzle, 0.20 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle.

The nozzle sets the range, not the printer: Bambu Studio gives the A1 mini, the X1 Carbon and the H2D the same layer height limits for the same nozzle. Only the preset lists differ: the H2 series, P2S, X2D and A2L ship no 0.28 mm preset for the 0.4 mm nozzle. Their limits still allow 0.28 mm. Figures are from Bambu Studio 2.8.4 (02.08.04.57, a public beta and the newest release); the 2.8.2 public release (02.08.02.61) has the same values.

What layer heights can Bambu Lab printers print?

Bambu Lab printers can print layers from 20% to 70% of the nozzle diameter, the limits in every Bambu Studio printer profile: 0.04 to 0.14 mm with a 0.2 mm nozzle, 0.08 to 0.28 mm with the stock 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.12 to 0.42 mm with 0.6 mm and 0.16 to 0.56 mm with 0.8 mm.

The limits sit in each printer profile under Printer settings > Extruder > Layer height limits (Min and Max). All 14 Bambu Lab printers in Bambu Studio carry the same values:

Printer 0.2 mm nozzle 0.4 mm nozzle 0.6 mm nozzle 0.8 mm nozzle
Bambu Lab A1 mini 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab A1 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab A2L 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab P1P 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab P1S 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab P2S 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab X1 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab X1E 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab H2S 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab H2D 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab H2D Pro 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab H2C 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm
Bambu Lab X2D 0.04 to 0.14 mm 0.08 to 0.28 mm 0.12 to 0.42 mm 0.16 to 0.56 mm

The minimum layer height on an X1 Carbon, as on any Bambu Lab printer, is 0.08 mm with the stock 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.04 mm with a 0.2 mm nozzle. The H2D, H2D Pro, H2C and X2D list the limits once per nozzle, as Extruder 1 and Extruder 2.

The 70% ceiling is Bambu Lab’s own. Its wiki calls 20% to 70% of the nozzle the range its lab tested for good print quality and says the limits are best left unchanged. OrcaSlicer’s documentation goes to 80%. The layer height calculator gives both ceilings for any nozzle.

Bambu Studio presets for the 0.4 mm nozzle

The Process drop-down lists named presets, and every printer opens on 0.20mm Standard.

Layer height A1 mini, A1, P1P, P1S, X1, X1 Carbon, X1E H2D, H2D Pro H2S, H2C, P2S, X2D, A2L
0.08 mm Extra Fine, High Quality Extra Fine High Quality
0.12 mm Fine, High Quality Fine High Quality
0.16 mm Optimal, High Quality Standard, Balanced Quality Standard, High Quality
0.20 mm Standard, Strength Standard, Balanced Strength Standard, High Quality
0.24 mm Draft Standard Standard
0.28 mm Extra Draft none none

The P1S, X1 and X1E load the X1 Carbon’s presets (named “@BBL X1C”), and the A2L adds a 0.20mm Steady preset. To print 0.28 mm layers on an H2D or P2S, type 0.28 into Layer height: Bambu Studio accepts the value without a warning.

Presets for 0.2, 0.6 and 0.8 mm nozzles

Each nozzle defaults to a layer of half its diameter.

Nozzle A1 mini, A1, P1P, P1S, X1, X1 Carbon, X1E H2D, H2D Pro, H2S, H2C, P2S, X2D, A2L Default
0.2 mm 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12, 0.14 mm 0.08, 0.10, 0.12 mm 0.10 mm
0.6 mm 0.18, 0.24, 0.30, 0.36, 0.42 mm 0.18, 0.24, 0.30 mm 0.30 mm
0.8 mm 0.24, 0.32, 0.40, 0.48, 0.56 mm 0.24, 0.32, 0.40 mm 0.40 mm

How presets of the same height differ

They change speed, walls and infill, not the layer. On the X1 Carbon with its stock nozzle:

  • Strength prints 6 walls and 25% infill where Standard prints 2 walls and 15%. Its outer wall runs at 60 mm/s instead of 200 mm/s. The A1 mini, A1 and P1P Strength presets make the same change.
  • High Quality slows the outer wall to 60 mm/s, cuts its acceleration from 5,000 to 2,000 mm/s² and switches the infill to gyroid.
  • Taller presets slow down: inner walls run at 300 mm/s at 0.20 mm, 230 mm/s at 0.24 mm and 200 mm/s at 0.28 mm. Bambu Lab’s wiki explains why: a taller layer pushes more plastic per second, and the hotend needs time to melt the extra.

Typing a new height into a preset keeps its speeds, so pick the preset for your height when one exists. Thinner layers cost time: Bambu Lab’s wiki prints one model in 1 h 19 min at 0.08 mm, 36 min at 0.20 mm and 28 min at 0.28 mm. Estimate your own job with the print time calculator.

What is the initial layer height in Bambu Studio?

Initial layer height is the thickness of the first layer, the gap between the nozzle and the build plate when the print starts. Every Bambu Studio system preset sets it to half the nozzle diameter: 0.10 mm for a 0.2 mm nozzle, 0.20 mm for 0.4 mm, 0.30 mm for 0.6 mm and 0.40 mm for 0.8 mm.

The first layer does not follow the preset’s layer height: on an A1 mini or P1S with a 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.08mm Extra Fine and 0.28mm Extra Draft both start with a 0.20 mm first layer. Bambu Studio’s tooltip gives the reason: a slightly thicker first layer improves build plate adhesion.

Nozzle Initial layer height, every preset OrcaSlicer’s maximum (65%) Bambu Studio refuses to slice above
0.2 mm 0.10 mm 0.13 mm 0.2 mm
0.4 mm 0.20 mm 0.26 mm 0.4 mm
0.6 mm 0.30 mm 0.39 mm 0.6 mm
0.8 mm 0.40 mm 0.52 mm 0.8 mm
  • Upper limit: the printer’s layer height limits don’t check the first layer. Bambu Studio only refuses to slice one taller than the nozzle, with “Layer height cannot exceed nozzle diameter”. OrcaSlicer’s wiki recommends at most 65% of the nozzle.
  • Zero: a first layer of 0 is reset to 0.2 mm with a warning.
  • One value per plate: Bambu Studio stores layer height per object but initial layer height per plate, so no object gets its own first layer.

How do you change the layer height in Bambu Studio?

In Bambu Studio, pick a preset from the Process drop-down, or type a value in Process > Quality > Layer height. Initial layer height sits directly below it in the same group. Choose the printer and nozzle first, because the nozzle decides which presets appear and which limits Bambu Studio checks.

  1. Select the printer preset for the nozzle you have fitted, for example Bambu Lab P1S 0.4 nozzle.
  2. In Process, pick a preset, for example 0.12mm Fine @BBL X1C.
  3. For a height between presets, open the Quality tab and type it into Layer height, or into Initial layer height for the first layer.
  4. To reuse the change, save it as a user preset. Bambu Lab’s wiki notes that only global changes can be saved.

Layer height for one object

Switch the process settings from Global to Object, select the object and set its Layer height, which overrides the global value. Select several objects to set them together. On a multi-color plate with a prime tower, every object must use the same layer heights.

Layer height for part of a model

  • Height range Modifier: right-click the model, choose Height range Modifier, click Range and enter the start and end heights. Then set the range’s Layer height; a new range starts with the object’s value.
  • Variable layer height: select the object and enable Variable layer height. Drag the layer height for different zones, or set the detail and speed slider and click Adaptive. It stays within the printer’s Layer height limits and doesn’t work with organic tree supports.

What happens outside the limits

Type a height outside the nozzle’s limits and Bambu Studio warns: “Layer height exceeds the limit in Printer Settings -> Extruder -> Layer height limits, this may cause printing quality issues.” Adjust snaps it to the nearest limit (0.28 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle). Ignore keeps your value, and the print still slices.

Only a layer taller than the nozzle stops slicing. The layer height limit error guide covers both messages.

Does layer height affect quality? What thinner layers change, and what they cost

Yes: thinner layers shrink the steps on curves and slopes, but 0.08 mm took 2.18 times as long as 0.20 mm in Bambu Lab's test. Filament use barely changes.

First layer line width: 0.5 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle, and why it is wider

Print the first layer about 125% of the nozzle wide: 0.5 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle in Bambu Studio and Prusa profiles. The wider line grips the bed better.
