“Layer height exceeds the limit in Printer Settings -> Extruder -> Layer height limits” means your layer height is above the Max or below the Min stored in the printer profile: above 0.28 mm on a Bambu Lab 0.4 mm nozzle, for example. Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer only warn: Ignore keeps your value, and Adjust snaps it to the limit. Slicing stops only on a different error: a layer or first layer taller than the nozzle.
| Message, word for word | Slicer | Shown when | Stops slicing? |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Layer height exceeds the limit in Printer Settings -> Extruder -> Layer height limits, this may cause printing quality issues.” | Bambu Studio 02.08.04.57, OrcaSlicer 2.4.2 | You type a layer height above the printer’s Max or below its Min | No. Adjust or Ignore |
| “Layer height cannot exceed nozzle diameter” | Bambu Studio (OrcaSlicer adds a full stop) | Layer height or first layer height is larger than the smallest nozzle in use | Yes |
| “First layer height can’t be greater than nozzle diameter” | PrusaSlicer 2.9.6 | First layer height is larger than the nozzle | Yes |
| “Layer height can’t be greater than nozzle diameter” | PrusaSlicer 2.9.6 | Layer height is larger than the nozzle | Yes |
Why does Bambu Studio say the layer height exceeds the limit in printer settings?
Bambu Studio shows the warning when the layer height you type is above the Max or below the Min in the printer profile’s Layer height limits. Bambu Lab’s profiles set them at 20% and 70% of the nozzle: 0.08 to 0.28 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle. It is only a warning: click Ignore to keep your value.
How to clear the warning
- Adjust sets the layer height to the Max, or to the Min if your value was too low.
- Ignore keeps your value. The plate still slices as long as no layer is taller than the nozzle.
- Raise Max under Printer settings > Extruder > Layer height limits (Advanced mode) to stop the warning for good. Bambu Studio will not edit a system preset, so save the change as a user preset. OrcaSlicer’s wiki ties layers over 80% of the nozzle to adhesion problems, so keep Max at or under 0.32 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle (0.4 × 0.8).
The limits for each nozzle
Bambu Lab’s X1 Carbon, P1S, A1 and A1 mini profiles set these limits per nozzle:
| Nozzle | Min | Max |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2 mm | 0.04 mm | 0.14 mm |
| 0.4 mm | 0.08 mm | 0.28 mm |
| 0.6 mm | 0.12 mm | 0.42 mm |
| 0.8 mm | 0.16 mm | 0.56 mm |
OrcaSlicer’s generic profiles allow 0.08 to 0.32 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle. PrusaSlicer has no such warning: its Min and Max only cap variable layer height and support layers.
Layer height cannot exceed nozzle diameter
This is the hard error, with no Ignore button. All three slicers block the slice when the layer height or first layer height is larger than the smallest nozzle in use. The usual cause is a profile for a smaller nozzle: the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 0.2 mm nozzle profile with 0.30 mm layers, the X1 Carbon’s default for a 0.6 mm nozzle.
How to fix the nozzle diameter error
- Select the printer profile for the nozzle you fitted, especially after a nozzle swap.
- Bambu Studio: set Nozzle > Diameter in the sidebar’s Printer panel. It then loads that nozzle’s printer and process presets.
- OrcaSlicer: pick the printer preset named for your nozzle, or on a custom printer set Printer settings > Extruder > Basic information > Nozzle diameter.
- PrusaSlicer: pick the preset named for your nozzle, such as “Original Prusa MK4S 0.6 nozzle”, or set Printer Settings > Extruder 1 > Size > Nozzle diameter.
- Lower the layer height or first layer height if the nozzle is already right:
| Slicer | Layer height | First layer height |
|---|---|---|
| Bambu Studio | Process > Quality > Layer height | Process > Quality > Initial layer height |
| OrcaSlicer | Process > Quality > Layer height | Process > Quality > First layer height |
| PrusaSlicer | Print Settings > Layers and perimeters > Layer height | Same group: First layer height |
The layer height calculator gives the range for any nozzle, and the 0.4 mm nozzle guide lists the presets.
Why can’t the first layer height be greater than the nozzle diameter?
The first layer height is the gap between the nozzle and the build plate, and the line has to be squished onto the plate to stick. PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer refuse to slice a first layer taller than the nozzle. Use 50% of the nozzle, at most 65%: 0.20 to 0.26 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle.
To fix it, lower Initial layer height in Bambu Studio or First layer height in OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer. Bambu Studio’s presets use half the nozzle (0.10 mm on a 0.2 mm nozzle, 0.40 mm on a 0.8 mm), and Original Prusa profiles use 0.20 mm. If your value already suits the nozzle, select the right printer profile (step 1 above). With a raft, the check uses the nozzle that prints the raft.
Prusa’s first layer calibration guide shows the signs of a nozzle set too high: lines stay round with gaps between them, and the print may not stick.
Layer height not working in Bambu Studio
If the slice ignores the layer height you typed:
- You clicked Adjust, which reset it to the Max. Type it again and click Ignore, or raise the limit.
- The object has its own layer height. A per-object Layer height, a Height range Modifier (right-click the object in the object list) or the variable layer height tool overrides Process > Quality > Layer height.
- You changed the nozzle. Bambu Studio loads that nozzle’s process presets, so check Layer height again.
- Only the top layers differ. Precise Z height changes the last 5 layers so the object ends at its exact height, unless that breaks the layer height limits.
