With a 0.6 mm nozzle, print layers from 0.12 to 0.48 mm (20% to 80% of the nozzle diameter), or 0.12 to 0.42 mm on a Bambu Lab printer. Start at 0.30 mm with a 0.30 mm first layer, the defaults in Bambu Studio’s 0.6 mm nozzle presets. Don’t expect double the speed: on a standard hotend a 0.6 mm nozzle lays about as much plastic per second as a 0.4 mm one, and it pulls ahead only with a high-flow hotend.
What layer height should you use with a 0.6 mm nozzle?
Use 0.12 to 0.48 mm, the 20% to 80% of nozzle diameter that OrcaSlicer’s documentation gives, and stay at or under 0.42 mm on Bambu Lab printers. Start at 0.30 mm, the default layer in Bambu Studio’s 0.6 mm nozzle presets. PrusaSlicer’s profiles for the Original Prusa MK4S and Prusa CORE One default to 0.25 mm.
Presets for a 0.6 mm nozzle in each slicer
| Slicer and printers | Layer height presets | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Bambu Studio, Bambu Lab X1, P1 and A1 series | 0.18, 0.24, 0.30, 0.36, 0.42 mm | 0.30 mm |
| Bambu Studio, Bambu Lab H2 series, P2S, X2D and A2L | 0.18, 0.24, 0.30 mm | 0.30 mm |
| PrusaSlicer 2.9.6, MK4S and CORE One | 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.32 mm | 0.25mm SPEED |
| PrusaSlicer 2.9.6, MK4S and CORE One with an HF0.6 nozzle | 0.20, 0.25, 0.32, 0.40 mm | 0.32mm SPEED |
| OrcaSlicer 2.4.2, generic Klipper printer | 0.12, 0.16, 0.20, 0.24, 0.28, 0.32, 0.40 mm | 0.20mm Standard |
| UltiMaker Cura 5.13, Creality printers | 0.20, 0.28, 0.32 mm | 0.20 mm (Standard Quality) |
The Bambu Lab A1 defaults to “0.30mm Strength”: the same 0.30 mm layer with 4 walls and 25% infill instead of 2 walls and 15%.
Bambu Lab’s preset notes describe the trade-off:
- 0.18 mm: “less apparent layer lines and higher printing quality, but longer printing time”.
- 0.30 mm Standard: “ordinary printing quality and printing time”.
- 0.42 mm: “much more apparent layer lines”, and a shorter print only “in some printing cases”. The speed section below explains why.
Line width for a 0.6 mm nozzle
| Slicer | Walls | Sparse infill | First layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bambu Studio | 0.62 mm | 0.62 mm | 0.62 mm |
| PrusaSlicer, MK4S and CORE One | 0.60 to 0.68 mm | 0.60 to 0.68 mm | 0.68 mm |
| OrcaSlicer, generic profiles | 0.60 mm outer, 0.66 mm inner | 0.66 mm | 0.72 mm |
| UltiMaker Cura | 0.6 mm | 0.6 mm | 0.6 mm |
Prusa widens the walls as the layers get thicker: 0.60 mm at 0.15 mm, 0.62 mm at 0.20 mm and 0.68 mm at 0.25 and 0.32 mm. OrcaSlicer sets widths as percentages of the nozzle (100%, 110% and 120%), so they rescale when you swap nozzles. The line width calculator turns any of these into a wall thickness.
What first layer height should you use with a 0.6 mm nozzle?
Use 0.30 mm, half the nozzle diameter. Every Bambu Studio preset for a 0.6 mm nozzle prints a 0.30 mm first layer, and OrcaSlicer’s documentation suggests 0.35 mm with a 0.39 mm ceiling (65% of the nozzle). Prusa’s MK4S and CORE One 0.6 mm profiles use a thinner 0.20 mm first layer with 0.68 mm lines.
| Slicer or source | First layer with a 0.6 mm nozzle |
|---|---|
| Bambu Studio presets | 0.30 mm at every layer height |
| OrcaSlicer wiki | 0.35 mm suggested, 0.39 mm at most (65% of the nozzle) |
| OrcaSlicer 2.4.2, generic Klipper profiles | 0.20 mm |
| PrusaSlicer 2.9.6, MK4S and CORE One | 0.20 mm, as in every Original Prusa profile |
| UltiMaker Cura 5.13 | 0.3 mm built-in default. Creality profiles match the layer height (0.20 to 0.32 mm). Warns under 0.1 mm or over 0.48 mm |
PrusaSlicer’s tooltip explains why a thicker first layer helps: better adhesion, and more tolerance for a build plate that is not perfectly flat.
- Set it under Process > Quality > Initial layer height in Bambu Studio, Process > Quality > First layer height in OrcaSlicer, Print Settings > Layers and perimeters > First layer height in PrusaSlicer, or Quality > Initial Layer Height in Cura.
- Check the Z steps if your printer has a T8 lead screw (8 mm per turn) and a 1.8° motor (200 full steps per turn). One full step is 8 ÷ 200 = 0.04 mm, so 0.30 mm is 7.5 steps. To end every layer on a full step, use 0.28 mm (7 steps) or 0.32 mm (8 steps), as the layer height calculator explains. On the same axis, 0.24 and 0.36 mm layers are whole steps. The 0.18, 0.30 and 0.42 mm presets fall between steps.
- Recalibrate the first layer afterwards, which Prusa says a new first layer height will most likely need.
Layer height limits for a 0.6 mm nozzle
| Slicer or maker | Lowest | Highest | Outside the limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| OrcaSlicer wiki, 20% to 80% | 0.12 mm | 0.48 mm | “Fish scale” patterns and uneven flow below, layer adhesion problems above |
| Bambu Lab wiki and Bambu Studio printer profiles, 20% to 70% | 0.12 mm | 0.42 mm | Bambu Studio warns and offers to adjust the value |
| OrcaSlicer 2.4.2, generic Klipper printer | 0.12 mm | 0.40 mm | OrcaSlicer warns and offers to adjust the value |
| PrusaSlicer 2.9.6, MK4S and CORE One | 0.15 mm | 0.40 mm | Caps only variable layer height and support layers |
| UltiMaker Cura 5.13 | 0.04 mm | 0.48 mm | Warning only |
The limits sit under Printer settings > Extruder > Layer height limits in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, and Printer Settings > Extruder 1 > Layer height limits in PrusaSlicer. For Bambu Studio’s warning dialog, see layer height limit error.
Why a 0.6 mm nozzle doesn’t print twice as fast
The hotend caps the gain. Plastic per second is layer height × line width × print speed, and Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer slow any line that would pass the filament’s Max volumetric speed. A 0.30 × 0.62 mm line carries 0.186 mm³ per millimeter, 2.07 times the 0.09 mm³ of a 0.20 × 0.45 mm line from a 0.4 mm nozzle. If the hotend melts no more plastic, the bigger line moves at about half the speed.
Worked example: Bambu Studio’s Bambu PLA Basic profile for the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon allows 21 mm³/s on the standard hotend with either nozzle.
- 0.6 mm nozzle, 0.30 mm Standard preset: the inner wall asks for 0.30 × 0.62 × 150 mm/s = 27.9 mm³/s, so the slicer slows it to 21 ÷ 0.186 = 113 mm/s.
- 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.20 mm Standard preset: the inner wall asks for 0.20 × 0.45 × 300 mm/s = 27 mm³/s, slowed to 21 ÷ 0.09 = 233 mm/s.
Either way, each second of inner wall adds the same 21 mm³ of plastic. Across the X1 Carbon presets:
| Feature | 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.20 mm layers | 0.6 mm nozzle, 0.30 mm layers |
|---|---|---|
| Inner wall | 0.45 mm at 300 mm/s: 27, capped at 21 mm³/s | 0.62 mm at 150 mm/s: 27.9, capped at 21 mm³/s |
| Outer wall | 0.42 mm at 200 mm/s: 16.8 mm³/s | 0.62 mm at 120 mm/s: 22.3, capped at 21 mm³/s |
| Sparse infill | 0.45 mm at 270 mm/s: 24.3, capped at 21 mm³/s | 0.62 mm at 100 mm/s: 18.6 mm³/s |
The 0.6 mm nozzle gains only on outer walls, where the 0.4 mm preset ran under the limit. On sparse infill it lays less plastic per second. Bambu Studio models each line with rounded ends (about 10% less plastic per millimeter), so its own caps sit a little higher: 126 mm/s for the 0.6 mm inner wall. The comparison still holds.
Prusa’s MK4S profiles match. The default 0.25mm SPEED preset for the 0.6 mm nozzle runs perimeters at 0.25 × 0.68 × 90 = 15.3 mm³/s, the same as the 0.4 mm nozzle’s 0.20mm SPEED preset at 0.20 × 0.45 × 170. Prusament PLA’s limit rises only from 15 to 15.5 mm³/s with the standard 0.6 mm nozzle.
A 0.6 mm nozzle prints faster only when the hotend melts more. The top speed of a 0.30 × 0.62 mm line at each limit:
| Max volumetric speed in the profile | Fastest speed |
|---|---|
| 15.5 mm³/s: Prusament PLA, Prusa standard 0.6 mm nozzle | 83 mm/s |
| 21 mm³/s: Bambu PLA Basic, X1 Carbon standard hotend | 113 mm/s |
| 29 mm³/s: Bambu PLA Basic, X1 Carbon High Flow extruder variant | 156 mm/s |
| 30 mm³/s: Prusament PLA, CORE One with an HF0.6 nozzle | 161 mm/s |
| 40 mm³/s: PLA Basic, Bambu Lab H2 series with a 0.6 mm High Flow nozzle | 215 mm/s |
Bambu Lab’s wiki gives the last figure: the H2 series reaches around 35 mm³/s with PLA Basic on a 0.4 mm High Flow nozzle and up to 40 mm³/s on a 0.6 mm one.
Check your own layer, width and speed against your filament’s limit with the volumetric flow calculator. The limit lives in each filament preset: Filament > Volumetric speed limitation > Max volumetric speed in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, or Filament Settings > Advanced > Max volumetric speed in PrusaSlicer.
